Key Stage 3 Design Technology

Pupils are introduced to Design and Technology in Year 7 through to Year 9 to develop their competence in the subject. In each year group pupils complete 3 projects, which takes them through the design stages leading to the manufacture of a product.

During each project pupils will:

·         Understand Health and Safety in the workshop.

·         Develop understanding of the design process.

·         Identify and use a variety of subject specific tools, components and materials relating to each project.

·         Understand materials used and properties.

·         Develop understanding of manufacturing process. 

·         Develop practical skills and techniques. 

·         Develop product analysis and testing and evaluation

Pupils will complete a Design and make task using a variety of materials and will be assessed on the following sections:

·         Designing

·         Making Tasks

Design & Technology is taught at KS3 so that pupils:

·         Can enjoy making useful products by using a variety of tools and manufacturing processes;

·         are motivated by seeing their ideas come to life in a working model;

·         can organise their time to produce an interesting and relevant design folder; 

What projects we do at KS3:

Pupils are introduced to the design process during year 7.8 and 9 and are introduced to  various Design and Technology Projects in Resistant Materials, Graphics and Product Design. Each year group completes a project in the various subject listed below: 

Year 7: Flat Pack Toy Project/ Desk Tidy (Boat Project)/ Key Ring project 

 

Year 8:  Coat Hook Project/ Picture Frame Project/ Packaging project

 

Year 9: Book End Project/ Clock Project /Graphic Design Drawing project

                                                                                                                                                                                

Pupils benefits from doing Design and Technology at KS3 by:

·         Developing practical skills

·         Enhancing their knowledge of how products are made 

Method of Assessment

Students will be assessed  at the end of each design and make task/project – this assessment will cover the content of both designing and making and will cover a variety of levels from level 3 to level 7. Students will also be assessed at the end of each year through and end of year exam.
