Key Stage 5 - English Literature

At Mesaieed International School, we follow the Cambridge International AS and A Level Literature in English syllabus. Each of these components is a one year course, but completion of the A2 is dependent upon the completion of AS. During the course, students are introduced to some of the most compelling works of our literary heritage and invited to assess them from differing critical perspectives. The context in which works are written, and the authors concerns regarding the human condition are also evaluated. The effect of language, and the power of the pen through history, is analysed; coherent, articulate responses are structured by students which are rooted in the text.

Aims:

appreciation of and informed personal response to literature in English in a range of texts in different forms, and from different periods and cultures

·         the interdependent skills of reading, analysis and communication

·         effective and appropriate communication

·         wider reading and an understanding of how it may contribute to personal development.

Method of Assessment:

At AS:

Two examinations of 2 hours. Poetry and Prose, and Drama

At A2:

Two examinations of 2 hours. Poetry and Prose, and Drama.

In life beyond academia, careers in politics, journalism, law, marketing, advertising and theatre all welcome Literature students wholeheartedly.
