IYear1Fish.jpgn Year 1 we want the children to enjoy their learning through concrete learning experiences in all subjects as the children prepare for later school years and a more structured learning approach.

The children are encouraged to become more independent as well as to develop their social and emotional skills.  Part of this is choosing an appropriate reading/class library book, completing and returning homework, eating a healthy snack at break times and being prepared for lessons such as PE.

In addition to the weekly homework activities, we also encourage parents to listen to your child read every day focussing on both reading – with confidence, fluency and expression – and comprehension skills.  Please also refer to the termly Curriculum Information for Parents for further ideas on how to support your child at home.

The children will continue to develop their skills and knowledge in Numeracy, Science and Literacy – through the Read Write Inc. programme – as well as other Literacy activities to develop their Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening skills.  We also try to develop the children's creative talents in Topic work (History, Geography etc.), Art and DT.  The children are taught PE, Music and ICT by specialist teachers.

Many other exciting things happen during Year 1.

  • Theme Days – 100 Days of School, Science Day, World Book Day, International Day, Qatar National Day, Sports Day, Interhouse Activities
  • Visits – the beach, toy shop, Mesaieed Park, Garden Centre
