Physical Education

PE at MIS

Physical Education and sport play a fundamental part of student life at Mesaieed International School. Pupils participate in two curriculum PE lessons each week. We offer a broad range of activities during curriculum time and extend these in our extracurricular programme.

The Curriculum:

At MIS, we follow the National Curriculum for England. Our PE curriculum is designed to be fully inclusive and offers a wide range of activities for pupils to experience. The main purpose is to offer a high-quality, physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to be involved and strive to succeed. We provide opportunities for pupils to become physically competent and confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. In addition to this, we offer opportunities to experience competition, which aims to build character and help to embed the values of sportsmanship (fairness, integrity and respect).

We strive to educate our students to become well-rounded athletes, assessing not only practical skill levels, but also creativity, tactical awareness, communication and the ability to accurately evaluate own and others' performances.

Aims:
The National Curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities.
  • Lead healthy, active lives.

Facilities:

Pupils benefit from outstanding sports facilities, including:

  • State of the art sports hall that can accommodate sports including basketball, badminton, tennis, volleyball, netball and 5-a-side football.
  • Astroturf football pitch.
  • Outdoor netball courts.
  • Small hall for dance and fitness activities.
  • 200m athletics track and long jump pit.
  • 25m swimming pool and 10m learner pool.

Pupils receive high quality teaching from our specialist PE teachers, utilising each teacher's area of expertise. We promote a 'sport for all' ethos in PE at MIS and believe that every child should have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Extracurricular and Competitive Opportunities:

The school offers a wide range of sporting opportunities for students through an extensive extracurricular programme. This ranges from recreational sport, to squad training. Within the extracurricular programme, there is access to external specialist coaches through our partnerships with local sports companies. The programme includes team games (football, basketball, netball, etc.), racket sports (e.g., badminton), athletics, swimming and dance. Some of these clubs are offered by external agencies, and coaching fees may apply.

MIS is proud to be a longstanding member of the Qatar Private Primary School Sports Association (QPPSSA), where we successfully compete in many inter school sports competitions against local schools. Children have opportunities to be selected for sports teams representing the school in sports including: indoor athletics, football, cross country, netball, athletics, basketball and swimming.
In addition to QPPSSA, the school takes part in the prestigious u11 British International Schools in Qatar Games (BISQ). This is huge annual event that sees 15 primary schools in the country come together for a full weekend of sporting competition.

Our selection processes for all teams not only consider ability, but also attitude, attendance and behaviour. We strive to select students who we are confident will be positive representatives of our community.
